Veterans Day Essay Contest
Students may choose one of the following prompts
*Why do Americans celebrate Veterans Day?
*Why is Veterans Day important to me?
*How can students honor Veterans?
Q and A
  1. Do essays have to be written during school?   NO, they can be written at home.  I would like to brainstorm at school and possibly send home a graphic organizer that was completed at school
  2. Do the essays have to be handwritten? or can the student type?  They can type them or write them
  3. What if the essay that comes back to school was obviously NOT written by the student?  Most of the time I can pick those out.  However, you are welcome to stick a post-it note on the essay with a note or just a "?"   The student must be able to read their essay.  If I'm in doubt, I'll ask  you.
  4. Does everyone have to write an essay?  I expect every 2nd-5th grader to write an essay and most 1st graders. Instead of punishing the students that don't participate, I'd rather reward the ones who do....  extra recess, a piece of candy, a picture of the "essay" writers in your newsletter, etc....  It's up to you if you want to make it a graded assignment.
  5. How do you pick winners?  I do read them all.  Personal stories and original thoughts are top on my list.

Deadline: Friday, November 3 by 3PM
Winners will be announced on Monday or Tuesday of the next week.  Mrs. Prickett will create a video of the winners reading their essays.  Winners also receive medals.

Every year we are asked to gather information from you to help guide our Professional Learning Plan.  Please take a minute to complete these surveys for me and Mrs. Rosetta. Thanks in advance!

Alabama Teacher Assessment Tool
The State of Alabama requires a completed ATOT observation for all certified teachers. The administrator is to fill out the observation form noting what they observe in 20 min in your classroom.  Our Educator Effectiveness Program is much more in line with Cahaba expectations and will be the tool we use for your EOY Analysis form.  Mrs. Rosetta will be working on ATOT observations over the next couple of months. When she comes in your room with a Chromebook, you should not be concerned.  Carryon with your plans for the day! It's just one those things we must do for compliance.

Progress Reports for Grades 3-5 should be posted Friday!

It's time to start thinking about the special teacher who will serve as our Teacher of the Year! Please nominate and bullet a couple of the reasons why you think they would be a great representative for our school.  You may email me or place something anonymously in my box. Deadline November 8.

"Belonging may be a feeling, but it manifests in tangible ways. A growing body of research and theory ..... concludes that belonging has a host of positive personal, social and academic benefits..... A sense of belonging generally leads to increases in the following:
Positive classroom behavior
Attendance
Self-esteem
Self-confidence
Positive peer relationships
Classroom engagement
Academic achievement
etc.....
Belonging is such a basic need that the lack of it can lead to 'dire consequences' and consequently, difficult classroom management situations. Students who feel confused, isolated, rejected, demeaned, ignored, or excluded are at high risk for.....
Anxiety
Anger
Frustration
Behavior and conduct problems
Distraction
Difficulties with self-management
Declines in Academic performance"
etc.

After reading several chapters in the book that this quote came from, "We Belong: 50 Strategies to Create Community and Revolutionize Classroom management", I started thinking about some of our wayward students. I hope they all know that they belong.
