Image result for take the challengeSecond, third, fourth and fifth grade teachers! My goal of having all of our students score At or Above Average is displayed in the hall with a question in place of the Spring results.  "How will you get there?"   Please brainstorm with your students something they could do to help us meet this goal.  Use a 1/2 of a post-it note and allow the students to write some of the best suggestions.  Every class should be able to fit 5-6 ideas on the Reading and Math poster.

TAC

TAC Meeting
Questions and Answers

1.What research supports students knowing and understanding their test scores/reading data/levels (the test numbers)? Robert Marzano explores empowering students with data in his book The Art and Science of Teaching. His research shows a 32 percentile gain in achievement when students track their own progress.  These are a few articles that support student data tracking:

2. Why are we spending collaboration and training time completing office administrative tasks? It was the most time efficient way to accomplish the task. Fourth and Fifth grade teachers were asked to commit 15-20 minutes, two weeks in a row, during PE time, to prepare test documents for parent pick up and put testing stickers on student files. All teachers had their specials time to collaborate.

3. What ways do Jennifer Serravallo/Lucy Calkins/current literacy specialists support the use of AR? STAR? Serravallo and Calkins advocate for volume reading. TCS uses AR/STAR to monitor volume reading and to serve as a tool for finding “just right books”. When our Reading Coaches,  McGough and Peters attended the “Teachers College” in NY, this question was asked to Lucy Calkins.  Calkins indicated that AR/STAR easily pair with LC.  Many of Serravallo’s strategies use leveled texts and Accelerated Reader offers a system to leveling text. Renaissance products, Serravallo strategies and Calkins can and should complement each other.

4. How/when is Trussville planning on adopting the Fountas and Pinnell Reading
curriculum? Textbook adoption for reading does not come up for a few more years. It is not being considered at this time.

2.  Parents shouldn't decorate doors during the school day.
If you have extenuating circumstances let me know.

Image result for valentines clip artAny parent coming to your Valentine Party should be listed on the Valentine Party Sign Up   If they aren't listed, they are NOT an approved guest and Nancy will tell them that the teacher didn't list them on the guest list (limited the four). You do not have to turn in a guest form for these parents.

PD time tomorrow will start with everyone meeting in the library for about 15 minutes. Sound Partners Training (Meredith's Room) and the Textbook/Technology Committee (conference room) will meet immediately following.  If you are not involved in these meetings you may collaborate with other teachers and use this time for planning.  Very close to 3:30, or when all meetings are over, the google duty sign up form will go live. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Image result for time out sign
Please make sure your class understands our School-Wide signal (the time out sign) and what it means.  I think it's great that several of you have other signals (hushing husky is one) that are used in your classroom, but it cannot compete or confuse students on our School-Wide signal.  Thanks for your help with this.

SOME SAFETY REMINDERS
Students should never go outside the school without an adult.  This includes sending students to retrieve things left at recess.  The front of our school is a city street!

If you are on the track and see a community member ignore the signage and enter the track area, call the office immediately and report.

The Collaboration Room has student information  displayed on the walls, therefore the door will stay locked.  If you need access to the Collaboration Room, please let Nancy know and she can give you a key.

Image result for help us out
It really helps all of us if you will reach out to me through email or text concerning discipline problems.  Please refrain from bringing students unannounced to the office.  Of course, this does NOT apply to emergency/volatile situations.  If you need immediate help, you should use your intercom to call Nancy.  Someone will come to your room immediately.
