Let's all plan on designating January as Dare to Dream Big month! I'll be spending a few minutes on announcements sharing my expectations for Goal setting. I expect for ALL of our students, K-5, to have time to discuss with you realistic goals and record those in their personal Data Notebooks. In addition, I challenge you to spend sometime being reflective and introspective. Where do you see yourself and your class finishing this year? The realty is simple, if you don't make a plan for where you want to be, it's almost impossible to get there. Dream Big!
This month we will be administering STAR and AIMSWeb assessments. I wanted to remind us all of the importance and "whys" concerning Small Group Testing. Many of our students have this accommodation added to their IEP, 504, or I-ELP This applies to STAR, AIMSWeb reading and math, as well as ACAP. Students should not be given the option. Because this is written on their IEP, 504, I-ELP and Testing Accommodations form it it NOT optional. Some reminders....
- A small group is fewer than 6 students. (this is the ideal and we will do our
best to stay close to this number)
- Students should be spaced out enough that they are not facing each other
or have another student close to them.
- The small group test administrator should constantly monitor the students.
Giving reassuring pats on the back, reminding them to show their work,
suggesting a drink of water etc.....
Most of our students with this accommodation have significant attention and/or behavior problems. The small group setting should provide extra emotional support and significantly limit distraction. If a small group testing time is not available when you have planned to give the STAR or AIMS test to your class, the students may remain in your room and be given another assignment. Possibly, SuccessMaker or myOn. Please let me know if you have any questions. I know this requires a great deal of flexibility and patience. Sometimes, it's helpful for me to consider all the "whys" when navigating the irritation this causes. When done correctly, it creates a more level playing ground for many of our kids and I know that's what we all want.
Side Note: All small group testing is set up by the student's Case Manager (IEP) Rachel (504) or Killmeyer (I-ELP). They will let you know the dates, times and location.
SuccessMaker usage reports are in your box. I'll continue to run this for you every 3-4 weeks. We have several students who are getting close to that 40 hour mark!
No Speech services this week. Ms Tittle is out of town.
We will resume the Husky Paw Prize Patrol next Friday, January 14. No Prize Patrol this week.
Omicron/Covid and the Flu are affecting everyone everywhere, including Cahaba. Please start off Wednesday morning with a hard RESET of all our sanitizing protocols.
- Handwashing/Sanitizing throughout the day
- Keeping hands away from your face.
- Sanitizing hard surfaces with the designated cleaners between students.
- Using the Yellow Dots in the hallways
AND Please encourage students to wear masks when they are face to face, in close proximity to each other. I also encourage you to consider picking up a mask again. Our Cahaba family has been extremely blessed. We have not had a student or a staff member hospitalized with Covid. We have not endured the heartache that many other schools in our State have had to navigate. I want to do my part to protect you and our students and I feel that the next 4-6 weeks are pivotal.
